NICK CONWAY
Updated on November 19, 2009
Nick Conway is the Head Coach of the USA Field Hockey Men's National Team.
In 2005, Nick Conway was offered a challenging
opportunity: Help revitalize men’s
hockey in the USA and help elevate the
U.S. men’s national team to international
contender.
He gladly accepted the challenge.
“I am delighted to be given this opportunity
with the USA Men’s High Performance
Program,” said Conway on his
new appointment. “This is an exciting
change to work with a group of very talented
athletes. We will have a very clear
and determined vision of where we want
to go, what we want to achieve and how
we are going to achieve it.”
After previously serving as the U.S.
women’s assistant coach from 2003-04
and acting head coach from 2004-05,
Conway accepted the new position as
coach of the U.S. men at both the junior
and senior levels.
Conway inherited a U.S. men’s program
that had struggled to climb up the
international standings. The team had
placed fifth in the 1999 and 2003 Pan
American Games and dropped to 7th at
the 2004 Pan American Cup.
But with Conway at the helm and
under a new structure developed by USA
Field Hockey Technical Director of High
Performance Terry Walsh, USA Field
Hockey initiated the Men’s High Performance
Center program and National
Championship Tournament in 2006. The
programs proved to be an immediate success
in attracting and retaining talented
players.
“The USA Men’s program has had significant
difficulties in achieving success
on the international scene,” said Walsh.
“We have to reset a structure which will
enable us to have a much better contribution
from different parts of the country.
We must have players from regions
all around the USA contributing. There
is no reason why we can’t be much more
successful within the Pan American region
at the very least. However we must
have a performance program towards
which our top performers can aspire.
Nick Conway is the integral link in this
whole program.”
With the resurfacing of the AstroTurf
field at the U.S. Olympic Training Center
in Chula Vista, Calif. in early 2006,
Conway has reestablished the centralized
training program for the U.S. men
and the revived dedication in the U.S.
men paid off with a dominant best-ofthree
series victory over Mexico to
qualify for the 2007 Pan American Games
and a four-game sweep of Pan Am rival
Trinidad & Tobago in the spring of 2007.
Further demonstration of the team’s newfound
respect was its invitation to the
China Four Nation Tournament in May
of 2007.
While Conway continues to meet the
challenge of establishing the U.S. men
as international contenders, there is still
some daunting challenges ahead.
We believe that we have achieved
what we should have achieved thus far,”
says Conway. “But our true challenges is
ahead of us at the Pan American Games
and beyond.”
A member of the USA Field Hockey staff since 2003, Conway was named head coach of the U.S. men's team in August 2005. He previously served as the women’s national team assistant coach and served as acting women’s head coach from May 2004 to March 2005. He guided the U.S. men to a spot in the 2007 Pan American Games and helped develop the growing Men's High Performance Center program.
