KAZAN, RUSSIA (April 20, 2008) – The United States Field Hockey Women’s National Team defeated Russia, 7-0, in their second game of the World Hockey Olympic Qualifiers in Kazan, Russia.

Forward Tiffany Snow scored the USA’s first goal in the third minute, and the rout was on.

The USA tallied five goals in the first sixteen minutes of play, forcing turnovers by the Russian and converting them for quick early goals. Snow eventually notched two more goals for a hat-trick. Midfielder Carrie Lingo converted a goal on the same kind of penalty corner shot deflection that the US opened the tournament with on Friday. Keli Smith, Angie Loy, Dana Sensenig also scored for the National Team.

“We’re obviously very pleased with the outcome,” said Head Coach Lee Bodimeade. “To play Russia in Russia is a very difficult task.”

Russia was limited to a handful of scoring opportunities and rarely penetrated the attacking third of the field.

“It was very difficult for us to play with them,” said Russia Head Coach Valentina Apelganets, through a translator. “They capitalized the midfield. After the first five minutes, it was difficult to play because [of the score.]”

Sunday’s game also marked the 200th cap by team captain Kate Barber.

The US National Team faces France on Tuesday, April 22. France is 0-2 in the tournament and has yet to score a goal.
