USA Field Hockey
Futures Program Tryouts
The
USA Field Hockey Futures Program
is the Olympic Developmental division of the United States Field Hockey Association. The
purpose of the Futures Program is to raise the level of hockey throughout the United
States and identify talented players that might be "future" Olympic level
athletes.
Futures participants meet on scheduled off-season weekend dates at various locations to
receive coaching and skill development techniques from some of the nation's top coaches.
Futures athletes also have the opportunity to advance to higher levels of play through
selection to Elite Team at the National Futures Tournament
All athletes must enter the program through a trial procedure. Depending
on where an athlete resides, different options are available.
1. Regional Trials
In regions conducting trials, the athlete must attend a 4 hour physical
trial. Athletes go through a series of drills and some game play. Based on scores as they
compare to the regional standards, athletes may be invited into the Futures program.
2. Regional Paper Trials
In regions conducting paper trials, high school coaches or approved testing centers
put athletes through a series of tests and record the results. The results are submitted
to the Regional Coaching Director for evaluation. Athletes will receive Futures
invitations based on their scores as they compare to the standards of the region.
3. Entrance through USA Field Hockey Partner Camps
Only camps partnered with USA Field Hockey (including USA Field Hockey's
Open Camps) may recommend athletes
into the Futures Program. Visit the USAField Hockey website for a listing of USA Field Hockey Partner Camps
4.
Coach recommendations
In a few of the regions, high school coaches receive
information about the Futures program and are provided with the
opportunity to recommended their top athletes into the U19, U16,
and U14 age divisions. Limitations to the number of
recommendations per school are strictly enforced. Limitations
are determined each year based on the number of open Futures
allocations that given year.
