USA Field Hockey Women's Indoor National Team Trials:

  • Trial Procedures

  • Trial Application  PDF  | .DOC

Feasterville, Pa. near Philadelphia on December 17, 2004: 5-10PM

Trials for the USA Men’s National Indoor Hockey Team will lead to the selection of a squad to represent the USA.  The squad will train, compete in tournaments in North America, play against other national teams and probably tour Europe.

Finances: To be competitive, each member of the squad must be prepared to contribute up to $2,000 and participate in fund raising activities over the next sixteen months.  While we hope to reduce this figure considerably through fundraising, there can be no assurance of this happening.

Players will be expected to purchase their own tickets for trips, once reservations have been made on their behalf.  This is to ensure that they participate and that unused tickets are not coming out of the team’s budget.  The cost of the ticket will be factored in to their contribution to a tour and any appropriate refunds will be settled at the conclusion of each event, funds permitting.

Cost of trials:  Participants will have to pay a non refundable trials fee of $75 and cover their own costs associated with travel, food and accommodation.  The $75 trials fee will be waived for those who toured England and/or Venezuela with the USA National Team in 2004.  In our effort to keep cost to a minimum, trials are being held near Philadelphia to coincide with the NAPL Indoor Hockey League, as many players and officials will be attending this event.

Trials and selection:  The trials are intended to allow the Selection Committee to select a squad of up to 18 players.  From this squad, the coaching staff will name a traveling party for each event.  This squad will be in effect for sixteen months, until April 2006.  Players will be selected based on the Selection Committee evaluation of their ability to contribute to a successful National Indoor squad.  Skills, tactical awareness, attitude, fitness, discipline, knowledge of the rules and ability to follow a game plan may all factor in to this decision.

The trials will consist of a series of drills and game situations to allow the Selection Committee to evaluate these characteristics.

Anyone unable to attend the trials because of injury, serious illness or a significant prior commitment must submit an Application requesting a waiver, along with the trial fee, no later that 12/8/2004. Applications can be requested by contacting Dean Nakamura at our National Office at dnakamura@usfieldhockey.com or 719-866-4365.  If a waiver is approved, it is the athlete’s responsibility to arrange an opportunity for an extended evaluation by the National Indoor Coach or his appointee, and they may be added to the Squad.  All costs associated with such an evaluation shall be the responsibility of the Athlete.   Please note that there is no guarantee that a suitable time will be found.  The only assured way to be considered is to attend the trial.

Program:  After trials, players will participate in training weekends, tournaments and tours.  These details are still being worked out.

Indoor Hockey Coach:  Scott Smith, Head Coach US Women’s Indoor National Team.  He returns after coaching the team in winter 2004, where he led the team on a very successful tour of Scotland and England.   His third year as assistant coach at Northeastern University, in Boston, Mass, he is a native of Winnipeg, Manitoba.  Smith has an extensive background in field hockey, particularly as a member of the Canadian Men’s National Team from 1995 through 2002. Smith graduated from George Brown College in Toronto in 1997. In 1999, Smith helped the Canadian team capture the gold medal at the Indoor World Cup held in Glasgow, Scotland, and in 2002, Smith won the Gold Medal at the Pan Am Games with Team Canada.

Required Action:  Anyone interested in participating in the trials must either submit an Application or apply for a waiver along with the non refundable Trial Fee by December 8, 2004, either by e-mail to dnakamura@usfieldhockey.com. or by mail.  Participants must mail a check for $75 for the trials fee, and complete forms as outlined below in checklist.  The check should be made payable to USFHA and received at the National Office in Colorado Springs by December 8, 2004

In your correspondence, please list your contact info for phone and e-mail and how you plan to travel.

Travel and Times:  All Athletes are required to be at the trials facility by 4:30PM on Friday, December 17, 2004.  It would be good idea to coordinate your travel and accommodation plans with others you know will be attending trials in an effort to reduce cost. The national office will try to help those who are attending trials get together to coordinate ground transportation and accommodation, but this will be the athlete’s responsibility.  Hotels are listed on the facility website below.
