US Field Hockey Names 1999 Women’s National Teams

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The U.S. Field Hockey Association has announced selections to the 1999 U.S. Women’s National Team, Women’s Senior Reserve Team and Women’s Under-20 team following a two-week selection camp at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J.

The 1999 National Squad features 11 players from last year’s World Cup team that placed 8th in the World Cup in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The 18-player 1999 National squad will form the basis for the team that will represent the U.S. at the XIII Pan American Games, July 24-Aug. 8 in Winnipeg, Canada.

Among those returning to the National squad, Tracey Fuchs (Ann Arbor, Mich.), the most-capped player in U.S. history, will look to earn her fourth trip to the Pan American games after earning a bronze medal in 1991 and silver medals in 1987 and 1995. Veterans Kris Fillat (San Diego, Calif.), Kelli James (Medford, N.J.) and Antoinette Lucas (Richmond, Va.) will attempt to make their third trips to the Pan American Games. Fuchs, Fillat, James and Lucas were also members of the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team along with Katie Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.) and Jill Reeve (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.). The team placed fifth at the Olympic Games in Atlanta.

The Pan American Games serve as a continental qualifier for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, with the champion team earning a spot in the 10-team Olympic tournament. The U.S. team placed second behind Argentina at the 1995 Games in Mar de Plata, Argentina.

Collegiate all-America selections Amy Herz (Willow Grove, Pa.) of the Univ. of Connecticut, Mimi Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) of 1998 NCAA national champion Old Dominion Univ., Courtney Sommer (Tulsa, Okla.) of Duke Univ., Michelle Vizzuso (Fairfield, N.J.) of the Univ. of Virginia and Jana Toepel (Perkiomenville, Pa.) of the University of North Carolina also earned selections to the National Team.

Former Penn State all-America selection and National team member Eleanor Stone returns to the team for the first time since 1996, and joins World Cup veterans Kate Barber (West Chester, Pa.), Chris DeBow (West Chester, Pa.), Jana Withrow (Hockessin, Del.) and 1998 USFHA Athlete of the Year Peggy Storrar (Mahopac, NY) on the 1999 squad.

The 1999 roster marks the first appearance for Herz, Sommer, Toepel, Jessica Coleman (Oceanport, N.J.) and Tracey Larson (Morrisville, Pa.) on the U.S. National Team. Smith was an alternate on the 1998 National squad.

Prior to the Pan American Games, U.S. National Team will host Canada and Chile in February at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in San Diego before traveling to Spain to take on the Spanish national team in April. The team will then get a sneak preview of the Pan American Games venue in June with a four-nation tournament in Winnipeg in preparation for July’s Games.

Senior Reserve Team to Train With National Squad

The U.S. Senior Reserve Team will practice and train with the National team in 1999, with members eligible to instantly join the National squad should the need arise. The Senior Reserve Team includes 1998 collegiate all-America selections Anne Marie Ambros (Bridgeton, N.J.) of Boston College, Traci Anselmo (Selinsgrove, Pa.) of Penn State, Lisa Cellucci (Broomall, Pa.) of the Univ. of Iowa, Lori Mastropierto (Richboro, Pa.) of the Univ. of Virginia, Nancy Pelligreen (St. Louis, Mo.) of the Univ. of North Carolina and Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.). Under-20 Team Prepares for 2000

Members of newly-established Women’s Under-20 Team will gain additional training, support and international experience while developing a cohesive team of players for the 2000 Junior Pan American Games and a chance to qualify for the Junior World Cup in 2001.

The 22-player squad and eight alternates includes 13 members from the 1998 USFHA Team of the Year, Under-19 Team and nine high school all-America selections including Christine Ashley (Plains, Pa.), Dalinda Banuelos (Escondido, Calif.), April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa.), Kristi Gannon (Escondido, Calif.), Katie Jo Gerfen (Lancaster, Pa.), Meredith Keller (Greenville, Del.), Carissa Messimer (Nuangola, Pa.), Jessica Rose (Lititz, Pa.) and Allison Stewart ((Wilmington, Del.).
