US Field Hockey Women Open 2000 in Argentina

The newly-named U.S. Women’s Field Hockey squad opens its 2000 season against some top international competition this week when the U.S. travels to Buenos Aires for a four-nation tournament and series of games with host Argentina.

The U.S. will meet Argentina, New Zealand and Spain in a tournament-style four-nation format, January  21-23 in Mar del Plata , before taking on long time rival Argentina in three matches from Jan 25-29 in Buenos Aires. The U.S. opens tournament play against New Zealand on Jan. 21 before taking on Argentina on Jan. 22 and Spain on Jan 23.

“This tour will be a great opportunity to play two of the teams that will be at the qualifier next March,” said U.S. head coach Tracey Belbin. “We have played Spain and Argentina before, but New Zealand is an entity still unknown to us.”

The U.S. will reunite with Spain and New Zealand, March 24 - April 2 at the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Milton Keynes, England. The U.S. and Spain will play in Pool A with Ireland, India and Germany while New Zealand enters pool play in Pool B with China, Great Britain, Japan and Russia. The top five teams from the qualifying tournament will earn berths in the 2000 Olympic field in Sydney. Argentina has already earned its trip to the 2000 Olympic Games by winning the Pan American Games championship.

“The tournament will also be a test for team members, as we will still be endeavoring to find the best combination for the Qualifier,” says Belbin on the Argentina tour. “We will still be able to experiment, but I would like to be able to play at a standard close to where we want to be by the end of January.”

Belbin hopes to use the tour as a springboard for its preparations leading up to the crucial Olympic Qualifier and, eventually, the Olympic Games.

“The team needs to set new standards for themselves, for us to get better, so this tournament should see individuals playing beyond what they have shown in 1999,” explained Belbin.  “The tour is obviously important in our overall build up to the Qualifier.”
