U.S. Under-20 Women To Tour Argentina

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— A select team of U.S. Field Hockey Under-20 athletes will make its 1999 debut this month when the team travels to Buenos Aires for a series of games against Argentinean club teams.

Selected from the 27 athletes currently training as members of the U.S. Under-20 squad, the team departs for Buenos Aires on Feb. 25 and is scheduled to return March 4 following its five-game tour.

Under the direction of women's Under-20 head coach Lauren Fuchs, the team is scheduled to play a pair of games against a Buenos Aires Under-19 team and three contests with an Under-19 Confederation team. The rosters of the two club teams are expected to contain many members of Argentina's junior national teams.

The 16-player U.S. roster features six 1998 high school all-America selections including Chrissy Ashley (Plains, Pa.), April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa.), Kristi Gannon (Escondido, Calif.), Meredith Keller (Greenville, Del.), Carissa Messimer (Nuangola, Pa.) and Jessica Rose (Lititz, Pa.). Fronzoni and Gannon were members of the 1998 U.S. Under-16 team.

The 1999 Under-20 team also includes U.S. elite team veterans Abigail Martin (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Molly Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.), Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.) and goalkeeper Becky Worthington (Fairview Village, Pa.) who join   Ashley, Keller and Messimer in returning to the team after playing for the U.S. Under-19 team in 1998. Last year's Under-19 team was named the 1998 USFHA Team of the Year.

University of North Carolina goalkeeper Amy Tran   (Grantville, Pa) and forward Abbey Woolley (Ocean City, N.J.), University of Maryland All-America selection Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.), Boston University midfielder Robyn Kenney (Readington, N.J.), Princeton forward Melanie Meerschwam (Amsterdam, Netherlands) and Penn State midfielder Kiley Kulina (Hummelstown, Pa.) round out the U.S.   touring team.

The 1998 USFHA Coach of the Year, Fuchs is the head field hockey coach at Temple University. She will be assisted on the tour by University of Louisville head coach Pam Bustin and University of Iowa assistant Tracey Griesbaum.

Select members of the Women’s Under-20 squad will represent the U.S. later in the year when they host a Four Nation Tournament in June featuring teams from Chile, England and India. In July, the Under-20 women are scheduled for a Canadian tour with a series of games in Winnipeg.
