Women's U20 Team to Host Four Nation Tourney
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. The U.S. Womens Under-20 field hockey team will welcome junior squads from Chile, England and India to the United States when the team hosts the USA Four Nation Under-21 Tournament, June 23-27, at Kean University in Union, N.J. All games are scheduled for the Kean University turf and admission is complimentary. After a quick tour of Argentina in March and with tentative travel plans ready for trips to the 2000 Junior Pan American Games and the 2001 Junior World Cup, the U.S. will give the home country a rare opportunity to view some of its brightest young stars in international competition. "The kids are psyched," said U20 coach Lauren Fuchs. "Theyre anxious to play some really good competition here on the home turf. This is a big test for us and a chance to show some improvement from our last tour (Argentina)." Following the teams selection in December, the U.S. went 0-5 in games against Buenos Aires club teams in a March tour of Argentina. However, Fuchs is optimistic about the challenge of the Four Nation Tournament. "Were looking forward to playing some different combinations and getting things a little more settled with the group," says Fuchs who was named U.S. Field Hockeys National Coach of the Year in 1998. "The tournament format will also be very helpful to us. We played a series of games in Argentina, but this format will help us in our tournament play at the Junior Pan Ams and Junior World Cup." The 18-member team features some of the top collegiate and high school players from the past season including high school all-America selections Chrissy Ashley (Kingston, Pa., Wyoming Seminary), April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa., Wyoming Valley West), Kristin Gannon (Escondido, Calif., San Pasqual), Meredith Keller (Greenville, Del., Tower Hill), Jessica Rose (Litiz, Pa., Warwick). The team also includes collegiate standouts Abby Martin (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Amy Tran (Grantville, Pa.) and Abbey Woolley (Ocean City, N.J.) of the University of North Carolina, Lindsay Gorewitz, Molly Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.) and Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.) of the University of Maryland and Melanie Meerschwam (Amstelveen, Netherlands) of NCAA runner-up Princeton University. Goalkeeper Amanda Latz (Palmyra, Pa.) of James Madison Univ. and Boston Universitys Robyn Kenney (Readington, N.J.) also made the U21 tournament team along with Virginias Jessica Coleman (Oceanport, N.J.) and Penn States Kiley Kulina (Hummelstown, Pa.). Also representing the U.S., goalkeeper Becky Worthington (Fairview Village, Pa.) of the University of Virginia led the Atlantic Coast Conference in goals against average (1.24) in 1998 while Penn States Maegan Galie (Collegeville, Pa.) ranked second in the Big 10 in scoring (48 pts). The 2000 Womens Junior Pan Am Games are scheduled for April in with the 2001 Junior World Cup scheduled for Buenos Aires. The U21 tournament features teams rich in field hockey tradition with England and the U.S. sending teams to the 4th Junior World Cup in Korea in 1997, while Indias field hockey history includes a record eight Olympic gold medals by the countrys mens team.
