U.S. Field Hockey Announces
1999 Women's Team Programs

U.S. Field Hockey’s High Performance Committee (HPC) has announced its elite team women’s programs for 1999.

In efforts to continue developing top players for international competition, the women’s team program for 1999 will include the U.S. National Team, the Senior Reserve Team, the Under 20 Team and the Under 16 Team.

U.S. National Team

U.S Field Hockey’s flagship program, the National Team will represent the United States at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada, July 24 - Aug. 8, 1999. During the year, the National Team will prepare for Winnipeg with week-long practices in January, February and March, an extended six-week practice in the summer and a schedule of tours and tournaments including a trip to Europe in April and a 4-Nation tourney in Canada in May. The squad is tentatively scheduled to conclude the year with trips to Australia and England in September and October

Selections for the National Team are held at A Camp during the first week in January.

Senior Reserve Team

A new addition to the program, the Senior Reserve Team will consist of top athletes on the verge of acceptance into the National Team program.

Training with the National Team in the winter and summer practice sessions, Senior Reserve members will learn the same technical and tactical skills in preparation for quick assimilation into the National Team program.

The team is scheduled to host Canada and two other teams during its February practice at the Arco Olympic Training Center in San Diego.

Senior Reserve Team members are selected at A Camp during the last week in December and the first week in January.

Under 20 Team

Providing athletes with additional training, support and international experience, the Under-20 team allows athletes to continue their development while creating a cohesive team of players for future competitions. "We would like to develop a core group of athletes and keep them playing together for two years in preparation for the 2000 Junior Pan American Games," says USFHA Director of High Performance Beth Vasta "We expect that team to qualify for the Junior World Cup."

Selected at A Camp, the team will practice in March before competing in Argentina in April and Winnipeg in July.

Under 16 Team

Traditionally the first step in the elite team program, the Under-16 team introduces young athletes to international competition  while preparing them for future national team consideration. The team will practice in February for a scheduled trip to the Netherlands at the end of March. Selections to the the Under 16 team are made at the conclusion of the AAU Junior Olympic Games in August.
