Women’s National Team To Host Canada at ARCO OTC

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New head coach Tracey Belbin will get a first look at her new team this month when the U.S. Women’s National and Senior Reserve teams assemble at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. for 11 days of training sessions and practice games with Canada.

The practices, scheduled for Feb. 17-28, mark the beginning of the team’s preparation for the XIII Pan American Games this summer in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. In addition to its training sessions, the U.S. squad will play five practice games with the Canadian National Team on Feb. 21, 22, 24, 25 and 27. The Feb 24 game is scheduled for 8 a.m. (PST) with all other games scheduled for 3:00 p.m. (PST). The games are free and open to the public.

The U.S. squad features six members from the 1996 Atlanta Olympic team including Tracey Fuchs (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Kris Fillat (San Diego, Calif.), Kelli James (Medford, N.J.), Antoinette Lucas (Richmond, Va.), Katie Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.) and Jill Reeve (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.). The team placed fifth at the Olympic Games in Atlanta.

In addition to the Olympians, the 1999 squad includes World Cup veterans Kate Barber (West Chester, Pa.), Chris DeBow (West Chester, Pa.), Jana Withrow (Hockessin, Del.) and 1998 USFHA Athlete of the Year Peggy Storrar (Mahopac, NY).

The National team also features collegiate All-America selections Amy Herz (Willow Grove, Pa.) of the Univ. of Connecticut, Mimi Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) of 1998 NCAA national champion Old Dominion Univ., Courtney Sommer (Tulsa, Okla.) of Duke Univ., Michelle Vizzuso (Fairfield, N.J.) of the Univ. of Virginia and Jana Toepel (Perkiomenville, Pa.) of the University of North Carolina. The Senior Reserve Team includes 1998 collegiate all-America selections Anne Marie Ambros (Bridgeton, N.J.) of Boston College, Traci Anselmo (Selinsgrove, Pa.) of Penn State, Lisa Cellucci (Broomall, Pa.) of the Univ. of Iowa, Lori Mastropierto (Richboro, Pa.) of the Univ. of Virginia, Nancy Pelligreen (St. Louis, Mo.) of the Univ. of North Carolina and Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) of the Univ. of Maryland.

Named head coach of the National Team in January, Belbin won a gold medal as a member of the Australian field hockey team at the Seoul Olympics in 1988. She served as hockey coach at the Queensland Academy of Sport in Australia before taking the position with the U.S. team.

The U.S. squad is scheduled to return to the Olympic Training Center March 17-18 before leaving for a tour of Spain in April. The team will then play in a Four-Nation Tournament in Winnipeg in its final preparations for the Pan American Games.
