Women's National Team to Test Korea

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— The newly-selected U.S. Field Hockey Women's National team will face a stiff first test as the team travels to Korea for a four-game series with the 1996 Olympic silver medallists.

The U.S. will play Korea in a four game series, May 29-June 4, at Pyungtaek high school and Soonchughyang Univ.

Selected at team trials May 11-19, the 16-member team will represent the U.S. at the XIII Pan American Games, July-23 - Aug. 4, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Following the Korea series, head coach Tracey Belbin and the team will join Canada, Scotland and Japan in a  4-Nation Tournament,  June 14-20, in Vancouver in final preparations for the Pan Am Games. The winner of the seven-team Pan Am tournament earns an automatic bid to the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.

"The tour against Korea is an opportunity for this group to play against a fast and skillful team - something they haven't been exposed to for some time" said Belbin. "The games will give us a good measure of where we are with our  individual skills and fitness levels.  And since Korea has recently
returned from a 4 nation tournament in Australia, the tour will be a good  indicator of where we are in relation to other international teams."

Australia is the defending World and Olympic champion. Currently ranked fifth in the world, Korea has already earned a spot in the 2000 Olympic Games after winning the gold medal at the 1998 Asian Games. Korea placed fifth at the 1998 World Cup including a 2-0 win over the United States. The U.S. placed 8th at the World Cup.

The U.S.-Korea rivalry has produced memorable games in the past. Korea pounded the U.S. team at the 1990 World Cup, 9-0, on its way to a bronze medal. The U.S. earned a measure of revenge at the 1996 Olympic Games with a last-second penalty corner goal to upset the eventual silver medallists, 3-2. The current U.S. team features  seven members from the 1996 Olympic Team that beat Korea including Tracey Fuchs (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Kris Fillat (San Diego, Calif.), Kelli James (Medford, N.J.), Antoinette Lucas (Richmond, Va.), Katie Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.) and Jill Reeve (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) and Cindy Werley (Allentown, Pa.). The U.S. placed fifth in Atlanta.
