U.S. Field Hockey Women's National Team Opens Play at Canadian 4-Nation Tourney COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. The U.S. Womens National Field Hockey Team will get its final tune-up before next months Pan American Games as the team opens play at the Canada Four Nation Tournament, June 16-20, in Vancouver, B.C. Joined at the tournament by teams from Japan, Ireland and host Canada, the U.S. team and head coach Tracey Belbin open the round-robin tourney against Ireland on Wednesday before taking on Japan on Thursday and Canada on Saturday. The tournaments third-place and championship games are scheduled for Sunday. Canada and the U.S. are considered top medal contenders at next months Pan American Games along with defending Pan Am champion Argentina. The winner of the Pan American Games receives an automatic berth in the 2000 Olympic Games Tournament in Sydney. The U.S. team is coming off an impressive series of games in Korea where they battled to a 1-1-1 record against the Asian Games champions and 1996 Olympic silver medalists. Korea earned a spot in the 2000 Olympic Games by virtue of its Asian Games title. The U.S. team features seven members from the 1996 Olympic Team that beat Korea including Tracey Fuchs (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Kris Fillat (San Diego, Calif.), Kelli James (Medford, N.J.), Antoinette Lucas (Richmond, Va.), Katie Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.) and Jill Reeve (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) and Cindy Werley (Allentown, Pa.). The U.S. placed fifth in Atlanta. The team also includes collegiate All-America selections, Mimi Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) of 1998 NCAA national champion Old Dominion Univ, Jana Toepel (Perkiomenville, Pa.) of the University of North Carolina, Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) of the Univ. of Maryland and Michelle Vizzuso of the Univ. of Virginia.
