United States Field Hockey Association Latest News Australia Test Schedule & Results U.S. Field Hockey Women To Get Sneak Peek at Sydney The U.S. Field Hockey Womens National Team will get a sneak preview of the 2000 Olympic Games venue, as well as a good look at the tournament favorite, when the team travels to Sydney, Australia for the Olympic Test event, September 22-26.
"As a team, were really looking forward to Sydney," said U.S. coach Tracey Belbin, whose U.S. squad placed second at the Pan American Games held earlier in August in Winnipeg. "Its a chance to play some different teams and check out the facilities that, hopefully, we will be making use of next year. I think it is interesting that Australia has selected these three teams to play against in a test event, considering the current world ranking of each team. I am eager to see the team that they put forward." The tournament will be a homecoming of sorts for the Australian-born Belbin who won a
gold medal as a member of the 1988 Australia Olympic Team. Belbin also sees the tournament
as a chance to gain experience for some of the teams younger members. The U.S. roster at the test event will be similar to the lineup that captured the silver medal at the Pan Am Games. The team features seven members of the 1996 Olympic team including Tracey Fuchs (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Kris Fillat (San Diego, Calif.), Kelli James (Medford, N.J.), Antoinette Lucas (Richmond, Va.), Katie Kauffman (West Lawn, Pa.), Jill Reeve (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) and Cindy Werley (Allentown, Pa.). The team also international games veterans Kate Barber (West Chester, Pa.), Chris DeBow (West Chester, Pa.), Michelle Vizzuso (Fairfield, N.J.), goalkeepers Peggy Storrar (Mahopac, NY) and Jana Withrow (Hockessin, Del.), and 1998 collegiate All-America selections Mimi Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) of 1998 NCAA national champion Old Dominion Univ. and Jana Toepel (Perkiomenville, Pa.) of the University of North Carolina. Former University of North Carolina All-American Nancy Pelligreen (St. Louis, Mo.) and Penn State All-American Tracey Larson (Morrisville, Pa.) will join the team in place of Pan Am team members Carla Tagliente and Eleanor Stone. Toepel and Larson will miss part of their collegiate seasons at North Carolina and Penn State to attend the event. The test event will also include a mens four-nation event featuring Champions Trophy winner Australia, Pan Am Games champion Canada, Asian Games champion India and Asian Games runner-up Korea. Australia, Canada and India have already clinched spots in the Olympic tournament. The two tournaments will be used to test the operations, results and information systems to be utilized during the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Women's National Team Test Event Roster
