US Field Hockey Names 2000 Women’s U21, U19 Teams

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The U.S. Field Hockey Association has announced selections to the 2000 U.S. Women’s Under-19 Team and Under-21 Team following a weeklong selection camp at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J.

      The USFHA will announce the 2000 Women’s National squad following the team’s selection camp, January 8-12, at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.

      The 22 selections and eight alternates on the U.S. Under-21 squad include 15 members from the 1999 U.S. Under-19 Team. Returning to the team are Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.), Lizzy Duffy (Oak Park, Ill.), April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa.), Maegan Galie (Collegeville, Pa.), Kristi Gannon (Escondido, Calif.), Robyn Kenney (Readington, N.J.), Kiley Kulina (Hummelstown, Pa.), Abby Martin (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Melanie Meerschwam (Amstelveen, The Netherlands), Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.), Jessica Rose (Lititz, Pa.), Keli Smith (Selinsgove, Pa.), Amy Tran (Grantville, Pa.), Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.) and Abbey Woolley (Ocean City, N.J.).

      The team includes four collegiate All-Americans in Galie (Penn State), Kenney (Boston Univ.), Meerschwam (Princeton) and Smith (Maryland) as well as four high school All-Americans in Carey Fetting-Smith (Baltimore, Md., Bryn Mawr School), Fronzoni (Wyoming Valley West), Gannon (San Pasqual) and alternate Natalie Martirosian (Richmond, Va., St. Catherine’s).

      Eight members of the team will see double duty on both the Under-21 team and the Under-19 team including Baril, Fetting-Smith, Fronzoni, Tiffany Leister (Oley, Pa.), Maria Whitehead (West Chester, Pa.) and alternates Kelsey Keeran (Columbus, Ohio), Audry Lasko (Emmaus, Pa.) and Martirosian.

      Goalkeeper Ashley Hohnstine (Oak Hill, Va.) of NCAA Champion University of Maryland, Carrie Lingo (Rehoboth Beach, Del.) of the University of North Carolina, Jill
Martz (Danville, Pa.) of Penn State and Sarah Wright (Bethesda, Md.) of Duke round out the selections to the 2000 team.

      Coached by U.S. National Team assistant coach Tracey Griesbaum, the Under-21 Team will compete in the Pan American Junior Championships in Bridgetown, Barbados in April. The Pan Am Championships serve as a qualifier for the Junior World Cup to be held in 2001 in Buenos Aires. The team will also compete in tours of Spain (March) and Europe (July).

U19 Team To Compete in Cal Cup, Montreal Cup

Coached by Northeastern Univ. head coach Cheryl Murtagh, the Under-19 offers athletes the opportunity to gain additional training, support and international experience while developing a cohesive team of players for future national team consideration.

      In addition to the eight players serving on both the Under-21 and Under-19 teams, the Under-19 team includes 10 players who earned spots on the 1999 U.S. Under-20 or Under-16 teams. Christine Ashley (Plains, Pa), Dalinda Bañuelos (Escondido, Calif.) and Katie Jo Gerfen (Lititz, Pa.) and Baril were included on the 1999 Under-20 rosters, while Emily Boyer (Oak Park, Ill.), Fetting-Smith, Martirosian, Amy Stopford (Hillsborough, N.C.) and alternates Colleen Barbieri (Centereach, N.Y.) and Katie Zacarian (Amherst, Mass.) played on last year’s Under-16 team. The youngest member of the team, 14-year-old  Stopford is also a member of  the 2000 U.S. Under-16 team.

      The U19 team also includes eight high school All-Americans in Fetting-Smith, Fronzoni, Gerfen, Martirosian, Claire Miller (Scarsdale, N.Y.), Emily Sinkhorn (Dublin, Ohio), Barbieri (Centereach) and Kelly Wood (Lititz, Pa., Warwick). Princeton University’s Emily Townsend (Houston, Texas) rounds out the Under-19 team with alternates Kim Gogola (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) and Michelle Marks (Lititz, Pa.).

      The Under-19 team will play in the California Cup in May and will travel to Canada for the Montreal Cup tournament in late June. Team members will also compete in the United Airlines Field Hockey League in the summer.
