Nakamura Named USFHA Director of Sport Development COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. Dean Nakamura, assistant coach at the University of California-Berkeley and former U.S. National Team goalkeeper, has been named the director of sport development for the U.S. Field Hockey Association. Dean Nakamura comes to the USFHA as the director of sport development with outstanding field hockey credentials, said USFHA Executive Director, Jane Betts. He has been through the system and understands our program from the grassroots level to the National Team. He will be an excellent addition to our national office staff. As director, Nakamura, 27, will be responsible for the continued growth of the sport of field hockey throughout the United States. His duties will include developing educational and training materials and selecting and supervising regional development coordinators. The Camarillo, Calif. native will also coordinate and direct the U.S. Field Hockey Equipment Grant Program that provided equipment allocations to 20 new or financially struggling field hockey programs in 1999. A member of the U.S. National Team in 1998 and 1999, Nakamura was also a valued commodity on the teams clinic and camp circuit where he helped promote the sport and train young players through the Nike Sports Leadership Camps and the AmeriCorps training program. In 1999, Nakamura served as an assistant coach at the University of California-Berkeley under U.S. Field Hockey National Coach of the Year, Shellie Onstead. The Bears won the NorPac Conference title and earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament play-in game. |
