US Field Hockey Names 1999 Men’s National Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The U.S. Field Hockey Association and men’s head coach Shiv Jagday have announced the selections to the 1999 U.S. National Team and men’s Under-20 team following a week-long selection camp at the ARCO U.S. Olympic Training Center in San Diego.

The 17-player National squad will form the basis for the U.S. team that will compete at the 1999 Pan American Games, July 24-Aug 8 in Winnipeg, Canada. Prior to the Games, the National team will host Chile in April and Scotland in June in addition to May tours of Germany and Canada. The team will also relocate to the ARCO Olympic Training Center from March to July for intensive training sessions in preparation for the Games.

The Pan American Games serve as a continental qualifier for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, with the champion team earning a spot in the 12-team Olympic tournament. The U.S. team has earned bronze medals at each of the past three Pan American Games field hockey tournaments, including a third place finish behind Argentina and Canada at the 1995 Games in Mar de Plata, Argentina.

The 1999 squad includes three 1996 Olympians in Steve Danielson (San Diego, Calif.), Steve Jennings (Bethesda, Md.) and Scott Williams (Gunnison, Colo.), and features 13 veterans off the 1998 U.S. squad. In addition, to Danielson, Jennings and Williams, Jang Badhesha (Santa Clara, Calif.), Rinku Bhamber (Simi Valley, Calif.), Jeremy Cook (Washington, DC), Shawn Hindy (Westlake Village, Calif.), Ryan Langford (Camarillo, Calif.), Shawn Nakamura (Camarillo, Calif.), Mike Schanfelt (Camarillo, Calif.), Brian Schledorn (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and goalkeepers Andrew Duncan (Edmonton, Alberta) and Dean Nakamura (Camarillo, Calif.) also return from the 1998 team.

Formerly divided into an Under-21 and Under-18 team, the newly consolidated Under-20 team will allow a core of players to train and compete together in preparation for the Junior Pan American Games in 2000 and a chance to qualify for the Junior World Cup in 2001.

The 1999 Under-20 team includes four members of the newly-selected senior National Team including Bhamber, Schanafelt , Patrick Cota (Camarillo, Calif.), and Chris Terrebonne (Marlow Bucks, UK).

Seventeen of the 20 players selected to the Under-20 team earned previous experience as members of the U.S. Under-16, Under-18 or Under-21 teams in 1998. The Under-18 and Under-21 teams were combined to form the Under-20 team last year. The 1999 Under-16 team will be named following selection trials January 30-31 in Moorpark, Calif.

In addition to practices at the ARCO Olympic Training Center, the Under-20 team is scheduled to compete at the Canadian Provincials in July and travel to Europe for a series of games in August.

The United States Field Hockey Association is the national governing body for women’s and men’s field hockey in the United States and is responsible for the training and preparation of teams to participate in international competitions such as the Olympic Games and Pan American Games as well as for the promotion and development of the sport throughout the United States.
