COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. The U.S. Men's Under-16 Field Hockey Team opens its 1999 season in April when the team travels to the Netherlands for an Easter Tournament in Valkenswaard. Scheduled for April 3-4, the tournament is expected to include top under-16 national and club teams from Europe and Canada. "We're expecting some really good competition and a great international experience for these young meny, many of whom have never been out of the country before," says U.S. Under-16 coach Shellie Onstead, who also serves as head field hockey coach at the University of California-Berkeley. "We have seen some incredible progress from the past year, and I'm encouraged with their work ethic. The desire is there. They know they are the future of the program." The 16-member U.S. tournament team includes Nick Bishnoi (Ventura, Calif.), Adam Dorn (Ventura, Calif.), Austin Hargett (Ventura, Calif.), Patrick Harris (Moorpark, Calif.), Sean Harris (Moorpark, Calif.), Eric Hodgdon (Somers Point, N.J.), Nick Hornbeck (Camarillo, Calif.), Danny Jordan (Camarillo, Calif.), Jim McDonough (Ventura, Calif.), William Molenaar (Ventura, Calif.), Byron Roach (Ventura Calif.), Todd Robinson (Ventura, Calif.) and Ramandeep Sandhu (Freemont, Calif.) and David Schmoyer (Doyelstown, Pa.) and goalkeepers Jeb Saez (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and Michael Lipka (Moorpark, Calif.). Initiated in 1998, the Under-16 team represents the first step in an athletes elite-team development process and serves to introduce young players to international competition while preparing athletes for future National Team consideration.
