US Field Hockey's Peggy Storrar Among Nominees For FIH International Player of the Year Award

Peggy Storrar Female Athlete of the Year

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - U.S. Field Hockey goalkeeper Peggy Storrar of Mahopac, N.Y. is among the nominees for the inaugural International Hockey Federation (FIH) International Player of the Year Award.

The 1998 U.S. Field Hockey Female Athlete of the Year, Storrar will represent the U.S. in the field of nominees that includes Alyson Annan and  Rechelle Hawkes of Australia, Karen Brown of England, Nadine Ernsting-Krienke of Germany, Sophie Llobet of France, Pritam Rani of India; Eun Young Lee of Korea, Carole Thate of the Netherlands,  Sue Fraser of Scotland and Mandy Smith of New Zealand.

Nominations for the award are based on play during the 1998 international hockey season: a season that saw Storrar anchor the U.S. team at the 9th World Cup in  Utrecht, The Netherlands last May. A member of the U.S.   national team since 1995, Storrar started all seven games in goal for the U.S. team and shared a shutout victory in a 4-0 World Cup win over China.

A two-time all-America selection at the University of North Carolina, Storrar recorded 15 saves in an epic effort against South Africa to to force a 0-0 tie through regulation time. The U.S. eventually lost the game in penalty strokes, 4-2.

Storrar is currently serving as an assistant field hockey coach at the University of Michigan.

The winners of the FIH award will be announced October 26, 1999 at a dinner commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the FIH in Alexandria, Egypt.

A 10-member selection panel, consisting of coaches, athletes, umpires and members of the Media will judge the nominations based on skill, technique, championships won, leadership qualities, impact on team performance, disciplinary record and involvement in hockey off the field of play.

Players nominated for the men's award include Jorge Lombi, Argentina; Jay Stacey, Australia; Magdi Ahmed Abdulla, Egypt; Russel Garcia, England; Jean Louis Ponthieu, France; Klaus Michler, Germany; Dhanraj Pillay, India; Seung Tae Song, Korea; Nawawi, Malaysia; Stephan Veen, Netherlands; Teun de Nooijer, Netherlands; Scott Anderson, New Zealand; Dr. Atif Bashir, Pakistan; Greg Nicol, South Africa; and Joaquin Malgosa Morera, Spain.

The winners will receive specially-commissioned bronze statues  created by Dutch artist, Jannelies Raaijmakers-Vermeulen.
