USA Field Hockey Women Fall to Korea in Champions Challenge Opener

BAKU. Azerbaijan – Korea scored two first half goals and held on for a 2-0 victory over the USA Field Hockey women's National Team in the opening game of the AtaHolding Champions Challenge.

Korea's Cheon Seui Ki opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a penalty corner goal past U.S. goalkeeper Amy Tran (Grantville, Pa.) for an early 1-0 Korea lead. The two teams battled scoreless through much of the remainder of the second half until Han Hye Lyoung added to the Korea advantage with a field goal in the 31st minute for a 2-0 Korea halftime lead.

Korea keeper Lim Ju Young held the USA scoreless in the second half to hand the USA the 2-0 loss.

The game featured a line-up of bright young USA stars including recent college All-America selections Michelle Kasold (Wake Forest) and Caroline Nichols (Old Dominion) who made their second international appearances for the USA. The match also marked the international debut of Duke All-American Laura Suchoski.

In the tournament's other first-day games, England defeated New Zealand 1-0 and China downed host Azerbaijan 2-0.

The USA returns to competition on Sunday against China (1-0).

The USA is the only country to appear in each of the three previous Champions Challenge tournaments which traditionally features teams ranked 7-12 in the international standings. The USA placed fifth in each of the three previous events and hosted the 2005 Champions Challenge in Virginia Beach. The USA is currently ranked 9th in the international standings.

The tournament marks the USA's final international competition prior to the Pan American Games, July 15-29 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The winner of the Pan Am Games earns the continent's automatic berth in the 2008 Olympic Games.
