Field Hockey Mourns Loss of Former National Team Member G.S. Issar
Gurcharn S. Issar, affectionately known
as “Papa Singh” in the field hockey community, died on August 9. He was 87
years old.
“Papa Singh” played for the U.S. Men’s
National team as a fullback from 1959 to 1963. He played on the USA team
that competed in the Olympic qualifier held in Lyon, France in 1963.
Issar won several men’s league
championships and tournaments playing with the North Jersey Field Hockey
Club. He donated the first North Jersey Cup in the 1970’s.
G.S. Issar fathered 4 sons and has 13
grandchildren. The Issar family has the unique distinction of representing
the USA teams for 6 decades.
