Futures National Championships, Regional
Rumble Set to kick off in Virginia Beach
Virginia Beach, Va. – USA Field Hockey will showcase some of the
nation's top young athletes this weekend as the National Futures
Championship and newly-established Regional Rumble get underway at the USA Field Hockey
National Training Center and the Princess Anne Athletic Complex.
The National Futures Championship runs June 23-28 at the National Training
Center with team competing in Under-14, Under-16 and Under-19 divisions
while athletes in the inaugural Regional Rumble compete June 25-27 at the
Princess Anne Complex.
The Futures National Championship features the top 646
athletes from USA Field Hockey's Futures Program selected to compete at the
event as a result of their performances at regional tournaments. In addition
to competing for a national championship, the championship's 646 athletes
will display their skills for college coaches and national team selectors.
Through their performances at the event, athletes at the
National Futures Championship may also earn selection to higher-level USA
Field Hockey programs and competition teams including the AAU Junior Olympic
Team (U14 and U16 athletes), Futures Elite and invitations to USA Field
Hockey’s Junior National Camp where selections are made to the U.S. Under-21
team, the USA/Canada Field Hockey Challenge Cup and other high performance
programs. The tournament also provides an evaluation opportunity for
collegiate coaches to view and rate the nation's top field hockey athletes
as potential student athletes in their respective programs.
In one of USA Field Hockey's newest events, 628 additional
Futures athletes will compete for the inaugural Regional Rumble title and
the opportunity to be seen by college coaches.
Open to all Futures athletes, the Rumble features a 32-team Under-19
division and an eight-team Under-14 group. Based on their opening-round
seeding following pool play, U19 teams advance to either a 16-team
championship bracket or 16-team consolation bracket to determine the
tournament champion. Under-14 teams compete in a seven-game round-robin
format to determine the U14 Rumble champion.
Established
in 1991, USA Field Hockey's Futures Program features more than 5,000 of the
nation's most promising young athletes. After receiving five months of
elite-level training and tactical instruction in preparation for possible
future selection to the USA National Teams, Futures athletes compete in
regional tournaments where the top players are then selected to compete at
the national championship tournament.
