Lancaster celebrates its penalty stroke victory over Princeton in the bronze medal game of the U19 National Futures Championship

USA Field Hockey Crowns National Futures Champions in Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Athletes from Pennsylvania dominated the three age group divisions in taking home national titles as USA Field Hockey concluded its National Futures Championships at the USA Field Hockey National Training Center.

The week of play also produced champions in USA Field Hockey’s inaugural Regional Rumble Tournament as well as the presentation of the new Barbara Longstreth Sportsmanship Award.

The culmination of USA Field Hockey’s Futures Program, the National Futures Championship featured 646 high school-age athletes selected as the top players in their region.
Pennsylvania-powered USA North captured the Under-14 division title while Keystone State representatives for team West Chester and team Scranton won the U16 and U19 divisions.

USA North went a perfect 5-0 in pool play before defeating USA Red (Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and North Carolina athletes) 5-2 in the championship game. USA East (New Jersey athletes) defeated USA South (New Jersey, Pennsylvania and California athletes) 2-1 for third place and USA West (Western states) defeated USA Blue (Midwest states) 1-0 for 5^th place.

After finishing second in its pool with a 2-1 record West Chester cruised through the final classification  bracket to win the U16 division title. West Chester defeated Pennsylvania-based Kutztown 2-1 in the championship game while Columbus (Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio athletes) defeated Trenton (New Jersey athletes) 1-0 for third place.

In the Under-19 division, Scranton  capped un undefeated campaign with a 4-1 victory over Boston to win the championship. Another Pennsylvania-based team, Lancaster, downed New Jersey-based Princeton in penalty strokes to take third place at in the U19 division.

In USA Field Hockey’s newest event, the Regional Rumble produced champions in U14 and U19 divisions. The Rumble featured an additional 630 athletes from USA Field Hockey’s Futures program. The Work-It team of athletes from Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Maryland won the inaugural Under-14 division while Tremble (New York athletes) won the first gold medal in the U19 division.

USA Field Hockey also honored former USA national team member (1956-64) and entrepreneur Barbara Longstreth with the presentation of the Barbara Longstreth Sportmanship Award. Under-14 team USA North, Under-16 team Cape May (New Jersey athletes) and Under-19 Surf City (New Jersey athletes) were the first recipients of the team award in recognition of fair play and good sportsmanship.

Through their performances at the Futures National Championship, athletes earned selection to higher-level USA Field Hockey programs and competition teams including the AAU Junior Olympic Team (U14 and U16 athletes, July 30-Aug. 4, Knoxville, Tenn.), Futures Elite and USA Field Hockey’s Junior National Camp where the USA Under-21 team is selection. The tournament also provides an evaluation opportunity for collegiate coaches to view and rate the nation's top field hockey athletes as potential student athletes in their respective programs.

National Futures Championship features the top athletes from the more than 5,000 of the program’s nation-wide participants. After receiving five months of elite-level training and tactical instruction in preparation for possible future selection to the USA National Teams, Futures athletes compete in regional tournaments where the top players are then selected to compete at the national championship tournament.

The event also served to kick-off USA Field Hockey’s sun safety awareness program, Sun Safe Play. The 1,200 athletes at the event were encouraged to cover up and use sunscreen to prevent skin cancer and melanoma. The program is conducted in partnership with the Melanoma International Foundation in honor of former USA Field Hockey team member Maria Whitehead who died of cancer in November 2006 at the age of 25.

Sun Safe Play!: USA Field Hockey and the USA National Team promote healthy and sun-smart decisions through their sun safety program, Sun Safe Play. Dedicated to the memory of former field hockey coach and USA team member Maria Whitehead and in partnership with the Melanoma International Foundation, Sun Safe Play seeks to educate young athletes on the prevention and detection of melanoma and skin cancer. Whitehead died of cancer in November 2006 at the age of 25.
