Red Rose, Jack & Jill Claim Titles as USA Field Hockey National Hockey Festival Concludes in Indio

INDIO, Calif. –  Red Rose, a team with a roster featuring current and former national team players and college coaches, continued a long tradition of National Hockey Festival success with a 1-0 win over Head to Toe to capture the Open Division championship to conclude USA Field Hockey’s National Hockey Festival at the Empire Polo Club.

In the day’s other championship final, first-time champion Jack & Jill defeated ASU Sun Devils 2-1 to win the Mixed (co-ed) Division.

The championship games concluded the four-day Festival event that featured 224 teams and more than 3,800 athletes. On Saturday, USA Field Hockey crowned 28 high school-age group champions in the Under-19 and Under-16 divisions.  The Festival is scheduled to return to Indio and the Empire Polo Club in 2008.

In the women’s championship game, defending Red Rose used a second half goal by former USA National Team member Tracy Larson Arndt to capture its sixth Open Division title at the Festival. In addition to Arndt, the team’s roster included 1996 Olympians Antoinette Lucas, Laurel Martin and Liz Tchou as well as current USA national team member Caroline Nichols. The team defeated a Head to Toe squad that featured top college coaches and assistants including Lesley Irvine (Stanford),  Amanda Janney (Temple), Brandi Alexander (Appalachian State), Quan Anderson (William & Mary) as well as current National Team member Kayla Bashore.

With a history in the sport spanning more than 30 years, Red Rose earned its first Festival crown in 1987. The team went 7-0 at the Festival and has not lost a game (14-0) in its past two Festival appearances.

In the mixed division, Jack & Jill (5-1) used a team deep in international experience to defeat the ASU Sun Devil club team and capture its first Festival title. Appearing in its 9th Festival, the Jack & Jill squad included current USA Men’s National Team members Steve Danielson and Shawn Hindy as well as former National Team players Ryan Langford, Jeremy Cook and Tara Jelley.

On Saturday, the 189 teams in the U16 and U19 divisions concluded play at the Festival with seven teams repeated as pool champions.  Mystx Storm (Pa.) won its third consecutive title while U19 teams Skillsets Selects (B.C.) and First State Diamonds (Del.) joined U16 champions Jersey Intensity Silver (N.J.), Pocono (Pa), Xcalibur Silverhawks (Pa.) and WC Eagles (Pa.) in winning back-to-back titles.

Pennsylvania was once again hauled in the most age championships  at the Festival earning 14 overall gold medals including nine in the U19 division.
