Schedule & Results

Angie Loy (L) gets a congratulatory high-five from Dina Rizzo after scoring the second of her tow goals in USA Field Hockey's National Championship game.

Virginia Beach, Va.  - USA Field Hockey National Squad member Angie Loy scored two goals and national squad teammate Dina Rizzo and developmental squad selection Dana Sensenig added goals to lead the Maryland High Performance Center team to the USA Field Hockey's Women's National Championship.

In addition to crowning the national champion, the tournament also served as a selection opportunity to USA Field Hockey's World Cup Squad. The 22 selected athletes and nine developmental squad members will compete for spots on the USA World Cup team as coach Lee Bodimeade narrows the list to 18 athletes to represent the USA at the World Cup, Sept. 27-Oct. 8 in Madrid.

Selections to the USA World Cup squad include Kate Barber (West Chester, Pa.), Kayla Bayshore (Shoemakersville, Pa.), Lauren Crandall (Doyelstown, Pa.), Rachel Dawson (Berlin, N.J.), Sarah Dawson (Berlin, N.J.), Kelly Dostal (Hatfield, Mass.), Kelly Doton (Greenfield, Mass.), April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa.), Kristy Gannon (Escondido, Calif.), Kelsey Keeran (Columbus, Ohio), Claire Laubach (Bristow, Va.), Melissa Leonetti (Erdenheim, Pa.), Carrie Lingo (Rehoboth Beach, Del.), Angie Loy (Loysville, Pa.), Caroline Nichols (Virginia Beach, Va.), Lauren Powley (Mountaintop, Pa.), Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.), Keli Smith (Selingsgrove, Pa.), Sara Silvetti (Wapwallopen, Pa.), Tiffany Snow (Escondido, Calif.), Amy Tran (Grantville, Pa.) and Barbara Weinberg (Louisville, Ky.).

Developmental squad selections include Kelsey Cuthins (Suffolk, Va.), Jill Dedman (Orange, Conn.), Katelyn Falgowski (Landenberg, Pa.), Jessica Javelet (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.), Michelle Kasold (Jenkintown, Pa.), Katie O'Donnell (Blue Bell, Pa.), Dana Sensenig (Denver, Pa.) and Laura Suchoski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.).

Loy scored field goals in the 28th minute to give Maryland a 1-0 halftime lead and then opened the scoring in the second half with a shot high into the net from the left side of the cage to give her team a 2-0 advantage.

Rizzo widened the lead to 3-0 just two minutes later before National Squad member Claire Laubach scored on a penalty corner for the South to cut Maryland's lead to 3-1.

Sensenig quickly restored the Maryland lead to 4-1 three minutes later before the South's Laree Beans concluded the scoring with a field goal in the 64th minute.

In a highly entertaining third place game, the Univ. of Iowa's Caroline Blaum scored a penalty corner goal seven minutes into extra time to give Midwest a 4-3 win over Pennsylvania/New Jersey. Midwest jumped out to an early 2-0 lead behind goals by Liz Sanders and Alex Kyser, but New Jersey/Pennsylvania roared back to take a 3-2 advantage on a pair of goals by USA National Squad member Kate Barber and a penalty corner by Sarah Dawson.

Midwest tied the game on Caitlin McCurdy's field goal at the 62:00 minute mark to send the match into overtime and set up Blaum's game-winning goal.

In the fifth place game, USA National Squad member Tiffany Snow scored two goals and Ashley Webber (Northeastern Univ.) added another pair to lead New England to a 5-0 win over Northern California. Webber and Snow scored both of their goals in the first half to give New England a 4-0 halftime lead while Mari Creatini added a second half penalty stroke to give her team its final margin of victory.

Individual awards included Midwest's Blaum as the tournament's top goal scorer with seven goals, national squad member Tran of New Jersey/Pennsylvania as Goalkeeper of the Tournament and national squad member Kate Barber of New Jersey/Pennsylvania as the Most Valuable Player.

Held in conjunction with USA Field Hockey’s National Futures Championship, the tournament features teams comprised of college-aged and older athletes including current members of the USA National Squad and recent college All-America selections. Athletes are selected to train at regionally-based high performance training centers and are selected to compete at the National Championships based on their performances during the spring. In addition to National Championship honors, the tournament serves as a selection opportunity to the USA National Squad and USA Junior National Camp.
