South to Meet Maryland in USA Field Hockey's  National Championship Game
Schedule & Results

Meghan Dean and Maryland earned a spot in the USA Field Hockey National Championship game against the South team

Virginia Beach, Va.  - The top-seeded South High Performance Center team will meet the surging team from Maryland in the championship final of USA Field Hockey's Women's National Championship tournament.

Maryland earned its spot in the championship game with a 9-0 win over New England. USA National Squad members Dina Rizzo and Angie Loy combined with Old Dominion's Dana Sensenig for six goals as Maryland raised its record to 3-1-1 to join the South in the final. The championship game is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Monday at the USA Field Hockey National Training Center in Virginia Beach.

Having already clinched a spot in the championship game, the South (4-1) lost its first game of the tournament after falling to New Jersey/Pennsylvania 3-2. New Jersey/Pennsylvania tied Maryland in the standings, but missed qualifying for the final on the point differential criterion. National Squad member Sarah Dawson scored two goals and Alex Martirosian added another score to lead NJ/PA to the win.

In the final game of the day, the Univ. of Iowa's Caroline Blaum scored two goals to lead Midwest to a 5-1 win over Northern California (0-5). The Midwest will play New Jersey/Pennsylvania in the 3rd/4th place game at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday while Northern California will meet New England (3-2) in the 5th/6th place game also at 11:15 a.m.

Held in conjunction with USA Field Hockey’s National Futures Championship, the tournament features teams comprised of college-aged and older athletes including current members of the USA National Squad and recent college All-America selections. Athletes are selected to train at regionally-based high performance training centers and are selected to compete at the National Championships based on their performances during the spring. In addition to National Championship honors, the tournament serves as a selection opportunity to the USA National Squad and USA Junior National Camp.
