South Clinches Berth in Final at USA Field Hockey's Women's National Championship Tournament

Virginia Beach, Va.  - The South High Performance Training Center team clinched a spot in Tuesday's National Championship game with a 5-2 win over Midwest at USA Field Hockey's Women's National Championship tournament.

In Sunday's other game, USA National Squad member scored two goals to help lift New England to a 6-1 win over Northern California.

Both games were the conclusion of Thursday contests that had been suspended on the account of lightning. Both games resumed in the second half.

The South received goals from National squad members Kelly Doton, Wake Forest's Lauren Crandall,  Duke's Katie Grant, North Carolina's Ali Tanner and Wake's Christine Suggs to remain undefeated in the tournament at 4-0.

The teams conclude round-robin play on Monday with South playing New Jersey/Pennsylvania (2-1-1), Maryland (2-1-1) facing New England (1-3) and Northern California (0-4) taking on Midwest (2-2)

The championship and classification games are scheduled for Tuesday, July 4 at 11:15 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at the USA Field Hockey National Training Center.

The teams at the tournament are comprised of college-aged and older athletes including current members of the USA National Squad and recent college All-America selections. Athletes are selected to train at regionally-based high performance training centers and are selected to compete at the National Championships based on their performances during the spring. In addition to National Championship honors, the tournament serves as a selection opportunity to the USA National Squad and USA Junior National Camp.
