South Team Climbs to Top of Standings at USA Field Hockey's Women's National Championship Tournament

Virginia Beach, Va.  - The South High Performance Training Center team took a major step toward a berth in the championship final with a 2-0 win over Maryland at USA Field Hockey's Women's National Championship tournament.

The South raised its record to 3-0 at the tournament on goals by Christine Suggs of Wake Forest and USA National Squad member Kelly Doton. New England dropped to 0-3 with the loss.

In other games, the Univ. of Iowa's Caroline Blaum and former James Madison standout Liz Sander's each scored twice to lead Midwest to a 4-0 win over New England while New Jersey/Pennsylvania got nine goals from eight different players to down Northern California, 9-2. USA National Squad member Kate Barber collected two goals for NJ/PA in the win.

Play continues on Sunday with the conclusion of Thursday's games suspended on the account of lightning. Games between Midwest and South and New England and Northern California will be resumed picking up in the second half with Midwest and South tied at 1-1 and New England leading Northern California, 3-1.

The teams at the tournament are comprised of college-aged and older athletes including current members of the USA National Squad and recent college All-America selections. Athletes are selected to train at regionally-based high performance training centers and are selected to compete at the National Championships based on their performances during the spring. In addition to National Championship honors, the tournament serves as a selection opportunity to the USA National Squad and USA Junior National Camp.
