USA Field Hockey Women Drop Overtime
Heartbreaker to England in World Cup Qualifier Semifinal
Schedule &

ROME -
England's Chloe Rogers scored on a penalty corner after time expired
in over time to hand the USA Field Hockey national team a 1-0 loss in
the semifinals of the World Cup Qualifying Tournament.
Both the USA
and England had already qualified for September's World Cup as the loss
drops the USA into the 3rd/4th place game against the loser of Thursday's
Korea/Japan semifinal.
"It's a heartbreaker," said U.S. coach Lee Bodimeade. "But you look at the
positive it's where we want to be and where we want to head these are the
games we want to play in and the games we want to come out on top of."
The USA survived two penalty corner attempts to end the first half, but were
not as lucky when England was awarded a penalty corner at the end of the
15-minute overtime period.
With time expired, the USA successful blocked England's first shot attempt,
but Rogers collected the rebound and fired it into the U.S. goal to prevent
a penalty stroke shootout and send England into the tournament final.
The USA endured
eight England penalty corner attempts until the final game-winning try. The
USA did not attempt a penalty corner in the 85 minutes of play.
"We persisted for a long period s of time I thought we had some
opportunities and were a bit unlucky that we didn't take them," said
Bodimeade. "Give the English credit, they had control for periods of the
game. But as the game went on I thought we really kicked it into gear and
had the better of the overtime period."
The USA's Angie
Loy (Loysville, Pa.) had a chance to give USA the sudden-death victory in
the first overtime period, but her shot was blocked by England keeper
Carolyn Reid. Loy again drove into the circle moments later but her
partially deflected shot rolled slowly past the right side of the goal.
"We're taking
steps along the way," said Bodimeade on his team's progress through
the tournament in building for the World Cup. "The opportunity to play in a
semifinal in a pretty big tournament is a good lesson for us to learn."
