USA Field Hockey Women Named USOC Team of the Month

Colorado Springs, Colo. - The USA Field Hockey women's national team has been named the United States Olympic Committee's Team of the Month for May 2006 after securing a World Cup berth at the World Cup Qualifying Tournament, April 25- May 6 in Rome, Italy.

Entering the qualifying tournament as the No. 6 seed, coach Lee Bodimeade's team went 3-1-1 in pool play to clinch one of the five available World Cup berths awarded at the tournament. The USA defeated the world's No. 6-ranked team New Zealand (1-0) and host Italy (2-1) in securing its  seventh straight appearance at the sport's world championship tournament.

The USA lost to eventual tournament champion England, 1-0 in extra time in the tournament semifinals before falling to Japan in the 3rd/4th place game.

The World Cup is scheduled for Sept. 27-Oct. 8 in Madrid, Spain.

The U.S. team for the qualifier included Kate Barber (West Chester, Pa. ) Carrie Lingo (Rehoboth Beach, Va.), Kayla Bashore (Shoemakersville, Pa.), Rachel Dawson (Berlin, N.J.), Kelly Doton (Greenfield, Mass.), April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa.), Kristi Gannon (Escondido, Calif.), Kelsey Keeran (Columbus, Ohio), Robyn Kenney (Readington, N.J.), Claire Laubach (Bristow, Va.), Melissa Leonetti (Erdenheim, Pa.), Angie Loy (Loysville, Pa.), Lauren Powley (Mountain Top, Pa.), Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.), Sara Silvetti (Wapwallopen, Pa.), Tiffany Snow (Escondido, Calif.) and goalkeepers Amy Tran (Grantville, Pa.) and Barb Weinberg (Louisville, Ky.).

The USA returns to international play in August when the team hosts wolrd No. 1 ranked The Netherlands, No. 2 Argentina and No. 3 Australia in the AstroTurf March on Madrid Four Nation Tournament, Aug. 17-27 at College Park, Md. and Virginia Beach, Va.
