Former USA Field Hockey Junior National Team member
Maria Whitehead died
Nov. 1 following a battle with cancer. She was 25.
A member of the USA Under-21 team in 2000 and 2001, Whitehead was a
member of the 2001 U.S. Junior World Cup team and earned a silver
medal at the 2000 Junior Pan American Championships.
Playing her collegiate field hockey at Wake Forest Univ., Whitehead
was a two-time all-Atlantic Coast Conference selection and helped
lead the Demon Deacons to three national semifinal appearances and
the 2002 National Championship.
Following her graduation from Wake Forest, Whitehead served as the
head coach at Saint Louis University for three years before joining
the Duke Univ. staff as an assistant coach in February.
A memorial service is scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday in Duke
Chapel. In lieu of flowers, please make donations
