USA Field Hockey Names 2006-07 Men's National Squads

 

National Squad selection Shawn Nakamura will enter his 10th year as USA Field Hockey team member in 2006-07.

CHULA VISTA, Calif.  - USA Field Hockey and men's high performance coach Nick Conway have announced selections to the 2006-07 Men's National and Junior National
Squads following performances at the inaugural Men's National Championship Tournament at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

Selections to the 30-player National Squad include nine 2003 Pan American Games veterans Rinku Bhamber (Simi Valley, Calif.), Pat Cota (Camarillo, Calif.), Shawn Hindy (Westlake Village, Calif.), Jarred Martin (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Shawn Nakamura (Camarillo, Calif.), Arjan Reyatt (Brea, Calif.), Jeb Saez (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), Ian Scally (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and Jason Wellings (Thousand Oaks, Calif.).

The USA men will attempt to return qualify for the 2007 Pan American Games in early 2007 in a best-of-three series against a team from Central America/Caribbean or South America.

The squad also features eight first-time members including Remco Couwenbergh (Northridge, Calif.), Blair Dickinson (Clive, Iowa), Jamal Grosvenor (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Mick Harner (Hanover, Pa.), Chris Pothier (Forestdale, Mass.), Ryan Sherborne (Greenfield, Mass.), Andy Sheridan (New York, N.Y.) and Rodrigo Stranieri (Moorpark, Calif.).

Also back for the USA, 1996 Olympian Steve Danielson returns to the team for the first time since 2002. Danielson had been competing with the U.S. indoor team during the past four years including the USA's 2003 Indoor World Cup team.

"We're all very excited about the players selected," said Conway. "We feel we have the potential to field some good teams from this group for international competition. The key will be getting them exposure to a training environment on a regular basis and we believe we can do that right here at the Olympic Training Center."

Members of the new squad will get their first test in a few weeks will when the team hosts Trinidad & Tobago in a four game series July 13-17 at the USA Field Hockey National Training Center in Virginia Beach.

USA Field Hockey also selected a full 24-player Junior National Squad at the National Championships.

"For us to be in the position to select a junior national squad at this event is an encouraging sign," said Conway. "We still feel we have a long way to go, but we do have an excioting foundation from which to grow."
