Moorpark Captures Men's National Field Hockey Championship; East Coast wins Junior Title
Results

Moorpark's Pat Harris was named the Most Valuable Player and Top Goalscorer at USA Field Hockey's Men's National Championships

CHULA VISTA, Calif.  - Moorpark - a team that would produce 12 new members of the USA Field Hockey National Squad - captured the inaugural Men's National Championship while the East Coast won the Junior crown to cap four days of tournament action at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

Moorpark capped an undefeated run in the tournament with a 3-1 win over San Francisco in the final while the East Coast Juniors defeated the Moorpark Junior team 3-0 in their championship match. In the 3rd/4th place matches, New York defeated Mid-Atlantic in penalty strokes after the teams battled to a 5-5 draw through regulation and extra time while on the junior side, Orange County/San Diego defeated San Francisco 5-1 for third place.

National Squad member and USA Field Hockey Athlete of the Year Patrick Harris scored two goals in the final for Moorpark to raise his tournament total to 10 and to capture Leading Goalscorer honors at the event. Harris was also named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. New York goalkeeper Tom Sheridan (New York, N.Y.) was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament and Mid-Atlantic goalkeeper and national squad selection Brett Dunn (Fairfax, Va.) was named the Top Young Player of the Tournament.

For the juniors, Player of the Tournament and Top Goalscorer honors went to East Coast midfielder Cale Walsh (Virginia Beach, Va.) while East Coast goalkeeper Matt Peasley was named Junior Goalkeeper of the Tournament.

In its first year, the National Championship tournament featured 128 athletes on four men's regional teams and four men's junior teams competing for top honors and for spots on the 2006-07 USA National Squad.

"We are really thrilled with the event," said U.S. men's high performance coach Nick Conway. "For the first year of the event, it was better than we could have expected. The quality of play was very high and the athletes had an enjoyable time. We feel it was a great success and now we just have to make sure we use this to move forward productively with the men's program."

The tournament also served as a selection trial for the 2006-07 USA National and Junior National Squads. Thirty athletes were selected to the Men's National Squad and 24 players earned spots on the Junior National Squad. A complete listing of selected athletes follows:
