Hockey Men's National Championship |
CHULA
VISTA, Calif. - Pat Harris (Moorpark, Calif.) scored four goals
— including the
game-winner as time expired —to lift Moorpark to a 4-3 win over
Mid-Atlantic at the USA Field Hockey Men's National Championships at the
U.S. Olympic Training Center.
With the win, Moorpark advanced to Sunday's championship final against
San Francisco (1-1-1) while Mid-Atlantic (1-2) dropped to the 3rd/4th
place game against New York (0-2-1).
A current member of the U.S. national squad, Harris helped Moorpark
rally from a one goal deficit with four minutes remaining in the match.
His penalty corner goal in the 66th minute tied the game at 3-3 before
his game-winner as time expired set off an on-field celebration as the
team concluded the round-robin tournament undefeated.
In the day's
other game, San Francisco's hard-earned 0-0 draw coupled with the
Mid-Atlantic loss was enough to send the Bay Area team to the championship
game. The draw also gave New York its first point of the tournament. U.S.
national team goalkeeper Jason Wellings of the San Francisco team was named
the Man of the Match for his performance in the cage that included stopping
a first half penalty stroke.
In the men's junior tournament, top-seeded East Coast Juniors (2-0-1) will
face Moorpark Juniors (2-0-1) in the championship match while Orange
County/San Diego (1-2-0) will meet San Francisco (0-3) for third place.
Cale Walsh (Virginia Beach) scored four goals to help East Coast Juniors
defeat Orange County/San Diego 6-1, but teammate Viren Pahiar (Fountain
Valley, Calif.) took home Man of the Match honors for his play on both sides
of the ball. In Saturday's other junior match, Moorpark Juniors defeated San
Francisco 8-1 with Moorpark's Will Holt (Camarillo, Calif., 2 goals) earning
Man of the Match honors.
In addition to competing for the
national title, the 128 athletes at the tournament may also earn selection
to the USA National Team based on their performances at the event. Teams
selections will be announced following Sunday's finals in each division.
