USA Field Hockey Crowns National Futures Champions

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Athletes representing the Mid-Atlantic states and Pennsylvania  earned national titles as USA Field Hockey concluded its National Futures Championships at the National Training Center.

In a format where top athletes from across the nation are selected at the regional level and then placed on teams for the national tournament, USA West won the Under-14 division with a team consisting of players from Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware, while Pennsylvania-based Harrisburg won the Under-16 and Pennsylvania’s Lancaster  captured the gold medal in the  Under-19 division.

USA West won the U16 title with a penalty stroke win over USA South  (Pennsylvania athletes) while Harrisburg won the U16 championship with a 4-1 final game win over Kutztown (Pennsylvania  athletes). Lancaster won the U19 crown with a 4-0  win over Las Vegas (athletes from Texas, Missouri, Colorado and Kansas).

Presented by Longstreth Women’s Sports, the Futures Championships featured 646 of USA Field Hockey’s top high school-aged athletes from 25 states and the District of Columbia competing in Under-14, Under-16 and Under-19 divisions.

Through their performances at the event, athletes earned selection to higher-level USA Field Hockey programs and competition teams including the AAU Junior Olympic Team (U14 and U16 athletes, Aug. 1-5, Virginia Beach), Futures Elite, the USA/Canada Field Hockey Challenge Cup Team (July 24-29, Virginia Beach), the Olympic Development Select Program, USA Field Hockey’s Junior National Camp or an assignment to a USA Field Hockey High Performance Center. The tournament also provides an evaluation opportunity for collegiate coaches to view and rate the nation's top field hockey athletes as potential student athletes in their respective programs.

The culmination of USA Field Hockey's Futures Program, the National Futures Champions features the top athletes from the more than 5,000 of the program’s nation-wide participants. After receiving five months of elite-level training and tactical instruction in preparation for possible future selection to the USA National Teams, Futures athletes compete in regional tournaments where the top players are then selected to compete at the national championship tournament.
