Netherlands Tops USA Field Hockey Women in World Cup Warm Up
 

Spandersbosch NEDWorld No. 1-ranked The Netherlands scored five second half goals to down a travel-weary USA Field Hockey Women's National Team, 6-0, in the first of two warm-up matches prior to next week's Samsung World Cup in Madrid.

The two-game series concludes on Thursday with a game in Neijmegen. The World Cup is scheduled for Sept. 27 - Oct. 8 in Madrid.

Arriving in The Netherlands off an overnight flight on Tuesday morning and taking on the top-rated Dutch Tuesday night, the USA held the Dutch to a single goal in the first half before succumbing to a flurry of Dutch  goals in the second half.

Kim Lammers opened the scoring with a penalty corner in the 17th minute to give the host team a 1-0 halftime advantage. After Minke Booij opened the second half with a penalty corner goal, the Dutch erupted for four goals in 15 minutes to put away the USA. Janneke Schopman scored on a field goal in the 45th minute before Sylvia karres added a pair of back-to-back scores in the 53rd and 56th minutes. Lammers concluded the scoring with her second goal of the game in the 60th minute.

The match marked the third meeting between the two teams in a little more than a month. The Netherlands defeated the USA 2-1 and 3-0 at teh AstroTurf march on Madrid Four Nations Tournament in August. The Netherlands went on to win the tournament in a field that included No. 2 ranked Argentina and No. 4 Australia.


The USA will meet world No. 2 Argentina in the team’s World Cup opener on Sept. 27 and will play world No. 4 Australia in the second game on Sept. 28. The USA earned its first victory over Argentina in 16 years with a 2-1 win during the AstroTurf March on Madrid in August and earned a 1-1 draw with Australia during the first round of the event.
