USA Field Hockey Women Draw with Canada, 1-1

April Fronzoni scored the game's first goal in a 1-1 draw with Canada

Virginia Beach, Va. – The USA Field Hockey women's national team settled for a 1-1 draw with Canada in the third game of a six-game series at the USA Field Hockey National Training Center.

April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa.) put the USA up early in the match with a field goal past Canada keeper Azella Liu to give the home team a 1-0 advantage at the four minute mark. Teh goal was Fronzoni's second of the series.

The USA defense and goalkeeper Barb Weinberg held the lead throughout the first half until Canada's Lesley Magnus scored on a field goal two minutes into the second period to tie the game at 1-1.

The draw gave Canada its first point of the series after the USA won the first two games, 3-0 and 3-2.

USA coach Lee Bodimeade continued to use a variety of player combinations in the series while evaluating athletes in preparation for next year's World Cup Qualifying Tournament in Rome, Italy.

The game marked the first international appearance for the USA's Alexis Mararosian (Richmond, Va.) who entered the game in the second half.

The game also features two of USA Field Hockey's youngest stars with high schoolers Kately Falgowski (Landenberg, Pa.) and Katie O'Donnell (Blue Bell, Pa.) taking the field for the USA. Falgowski earned her first international team start for the USA. Both 16-year-olds will compete in the Junior World Cup for the USA, Sept. 14-25 in Santiago, Chile.

The USA/Canada series continues with Game 4 at 7 p.m. Thursday at the USA Field Hockey National Training Center in Virginia Beach.
