USA Field Hockey Names 2005-06 Women's U21 Squad

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Thirty-eight of the nations top young field hockey athletes have earned spots on USA Field Hockey’s 2005-06 Under-21 squad following team trials, July 21-24 at Penn State Univ.

The Under-21 squad serves to provide additional experience for promising athletes in preparation for possible selection to the U.S. national team. The 2005-06 U21 squad will compete in domestic and international competitions in 2005-06 including USA Field Hockey’s Elite Performance Training Center program and the USA Field Hockey National Championships. Eighteen members of the squad, including USA National team selections Lauren Crandall (Doyelstown, Pa./Wake Forest), Lauren Powley (Mountaintop, Pa./Maryland) and Katie O'Donnell (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon HS) will represent the United States at the Junior World Cup, Sept. 14-25 in Santiago, Chile.

The U.S. junior squad features eight high school athletes with goalkeeper Samantha Nelson (Rockville, Md./Holton Arms HS) earning a spot as the youngest selection at 16 years, 5 months.

The 30 college athletes selected feature five All-America selections from 2004 including Powley, Rachel Dawson (Berlin, N.J./North Carolina), Lori Hillman (Gibbsboro, N.J./Michigan), Doni-Melissa Jantzen (Shoreham, N.Y./Hofstra), Jessica Javelet (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Louisville). Duke Univ., the Univ. of Iowa, the Univ. of Michigan and defending national champion Wake Forest each placed four athletes on the squad.
