USA Field Hockey to Crown National Champions

COLORADO Springs, Colo. - USA Field Hockey will crown its 2005 National Champion this week when five regional teams and the USA Under-21 squad compete for top honors, June 29- July 3 at the USA Field Hockey National Training Center in Virginia Beach.

All games are open to the public at no charge.

Sponsored by CranBarry, the six-team tournament marks the culmination of USA Field Hockey's Elite Performance Training Center program where college-age and older athletes are offered the opportunity for regionalized training with some of the nation's top coaches. Through the continued elite-level training, athletes in the program are encouraged to continue working towards spots on the USA National Team.

At the National Championship, teams representing the regional sites in Maryland, New England, Midwest, Pennsylvania/New Jersey and a combined South/California team will compete with the USA Under-21 team in a round-robin tournament format. The tournament is scheduled to conclude Sunday with classification games.

The teams are coached by some of the nation's top college coaches including Missy Meharg (Univ. of Maryland), Cheryl Murtagh (Northeastern Univ.), Tracey Greisbaum (Univ. of Iowa), Kristen Holmes-Winn (Princeton Univ.), and Jen Averill (Wake Forest Univ.).

The team rosters include current U.S. National Team athletes Kelsey Keeran (South/California), Claire Laubach (South/California) and goalkeeper Diana Nelson (New England) as well as former national team stars Abbey Woolley (Maryland), Keli Smith (Maryland) and Tracey Larson (Pennsylvania/New Jersey) and 2004 All-America selections Dana Sensenig (Maryland), Doni-Melissa Jantzen (Pennsylvania/New Jersey), Mariana Creatini (New England), Natalie Martirosian (Pennsylvania/New jersey), Mia Link (USA U21), Allie Howard (USA U21) and Rachel Dawson (USA U21).

The USA Under-21 team and coach Tracey Fuchs will use the Championship in their preperation for the Women's Junior World Cup September 14-25 in Santiago, Chile.

The USA Field Hockey in Virginia Beach will also be the site of next week's Rabobank Challenge, July 8-16, featuring the national teams from England, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain and the United States.
