Santiago - Madonna Blyth scored a penalty corner goal in the final minute of play to give Australia a 1-0 win over the USA Field Hockey Under-12 team at the Junior World Cup. The loss sets up a showdown with Spain on Wednesday for the chance to move on to the tournament semifinals. With Spain and The Netherlands playing to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday, a USA win over Spain puts a USA team in a world-level semifinal game for the first time since the 1994 World Cup. A loss or a draw against Spain drops the USA into the 5th-8thh classification playoffs. "It was just a hard-fought game and Australia had the better of the match," said USA coach Tracey Fuchs. "We would have liked to have come away with a draw, but you know, if we come out and beat Spain tomorrow, we put ourselves in a great position."
After the two teams battled to a
scoreless draw in the first 69
minutes of the match, Australia got
the break it needed when the team
was awarded a penalty corner as the
clock would down. Kobie McGurk's
first shot was blocked by the USA's
Lauren Powley (Mountaintop,
Pa./Maryland), but Blyth gathered
the rebound and slammed it into the
USA net. "We know we we need three points against Spain to have a shot at the final," said Fuchs. "We'll be prepared and ready to go and it should be exciting."
