USA Field Hockey U21 Women
Rout Zimbabwe at Women's Junior World Cup
Santiago
- Eleven different players
scored for the USA Field Hockey
Under-21 team as the USA defeated
Zimbabwe, 14-0, in the final game of
initial pool play at the Women's
Junior World Cup.
With the win, the USA remained on
top of Pool A with seven points and
a 2-0-1 record. The team will now
move to the next phase of the
competition where the USA will meet
the top three teams from Pool D.
"It's new a tournament now," said
Fuchs on the next phase of the
tournament that will include Chile,
Australia and Spain. "We're just
going to do what we've been doing
and take each game one at a time an
focus on the opponent at hand and
hopefully good things will happen."
The USA needed nine minutes to score
their first goal against Zimbabwe,
but when Katie Grant (Lehighton,
Pa/Duke) knocked in a penalty corner
to give the USA the lead, it would
end the second longest scoring
draught the squad would endure on
the day.
Mia Link (Jenkintown, Pa./Virginia),
Cara-Lynn Lopresti (San Diego/Duke),
Lauren Ehrlichman (Wellesley,
Mass./Princeton) and Michelle Kasold
(Chapel Hill, N.C./Wake Forest)
collected first-half goals to give
the USA a 5-0 halftime lead.
The scoring frenzy continued in the
second half as the USA added five
goals in a ten-minute span to open
the second half. Link, Laree Beans
(Allentown, Pa./North Carolina),
Lauren Crandall (Doyelstown,
Pa./Wake Forest), Jamie Whitten
(Maidens, Va./Wake Forest) and
Katelyn Falgowski (Landenberg,
Pa./St. Marks HS) put the USA up
10-0. Katie Evans (Newtown Square,
Pa/Delaware) added two goals,
Crandall added her second goal of
the game and Rachel Dawson (Berlin,
N.J./North Carolina) added a goal to
conclude the scoring.
High school senior Brianna O'Donnell
(Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) spent
a lonely day in the cage as the USA
goalkeeper knocked away Zimbabwe's
only serious scoring threats on
back-to-back penalty corners with 14
minutes left in the game.
"It was good that we were able to
stay disciplined," said USA
midfielder Lauren Powley
(Mountaintop, Pa./Maryland) on the
lopsided victory. "Even when
we could take it ourselves or
dripple more we stuck to the game
plan. We we were able to focus on
what we were trying to do and work
with each other."
"It's a testament to our
unselfishness as a team," said
Fuchs. "We were able to work on some
stuff and try some new things and I
think we did very well."
The USA resumes play in the second
phase of the tournament on Sunday at
time and against an opponent yet to
be determined.
