Open First Day of Action at Indoor Pan Am Cup
The USA Field Hockey
indoor women's team recorded a perfect 2-0 start while the USA men
opened at 2-1 at the 3rd Pan american Cup in Kitchener, Ontario.
The Indoor
Pan Am Cup serves as the continental qualifier for the 2nd Indoor World
Cup, Feb. 14-18, 2007 in Vienna, Austria. The top two finishers in the
men's Pan Am event and the top finisher in the women's division are scheduled to qualify for the Indoor World Cup.
The USA women opened the tournament with a
crucial 2-1 win over co-favorite Canada as Jen Mathias scored both goals
for the USA. Mathias added four more goals in a 10-0 victory over
Venezuela to keep the USA women perfect on the day. the U.S. team will
try to clinch the number one seed in round-robin semifinals when the
team takes on Trinidad & Tobago (1-1) on Saturday.
The USA finished the first day of
competition with a 2-1 record after recording early victories over
Guyana (4-2) and Venezuela (6-2) before falling to Trinidad & Tobabo
(8-0) in the final game of the opening day. The USA is currently in
third place in the men's division with a final game remaining against
Canada (2-0) before the start of crossover matches. Patrick Harris leads
the USA men in scoring with four goals - including a hat trick effort
against Venezuela - while Jeremy Cook has added three goals for
the USA.
