USA Field Hockey’s Futures
Program Crowns National Champs
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Athletes from the
state of Pennsylvania swept national titles as USA Field Hockey concluded
its Futures National Championships at the USA Field Hockey National Training
Center.
In a format where top athletes from
across the nation are selected at the regional level and the placed on teams
for the national tournament, Under-14 division gold medalist USA East,
Under-16 winner Stroudsburg and Under-19 champion all consisted of athletes
exclusively from the Keystone State.
USA East won the U16 title with a 2-0
win over USA Blue (New Jersey athletes) while Stroudsburg won the U16
championship with a 1-0 final game win over Syracuse (New York athletes).
West Chester won the U19 crown with a 1-0 win over Phoenix (athletes from
Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Texas and Missouri)
Featuring the top 646 field hockey
athletes from USA Field Hockey’s Futures Olympic Development Program, the
tournament also serves as a selection opportunity for further USA Field
Hockey programs including the AAU Junior Olympic Games (Aug. 3-6, New
Orleans, La.), the USA/Canada Challenge (August 2-8, Vancouver, B.C.) and
the Olympic Development Select Trial (July 21-24, Penn State Univ.) where
athletes may gain additional opportunities for regionalized training and
tours.
The culmination of USA Field Hockey's
Futures Program, the National Futures Champions features the top athletes
from the more than 5,000 of the program’s nation-wide participants. After
receiving five months of elite-level training and tactical instruction in
preparation for possible future selection to the USA National Teams, Futures
athletes compete in regional tournaments where the top player’s are then
selected to compete at the national championship tournament. At the national
tournament, athletes are placed on regional teams in the Under-14, Under-16
or Under-19 divisions.
The Futures Championship ran July 9-17
