Fuchs Returns to Univ. of Michigan Staff as
Assistant Coach
Colorado Springs, Colo. -- USA Field
Hockey Junior National Team coach Tracey Fuchs will
return to the Univ. of Michigan as an assistant coach.
A member of the USA Field Hockey staff since her
retirement from international play in May, 2004, Fuchs
will remain involved with the USA Under-21 team as it
prepares for the Junior World Cup in September.
"Tracey Fuchs has proven to be an outstanding coach,"
said USA Field Hockey Executive Director Sheila Walker.
"We anticipate she will remain actively involved in our
pool of coaches for our junior teams and will continue
her work with our Junior World Cup team."
Fuchs led the USA Under-21 team to a silver-medal
finish at the Pan America Junior Championships last
month in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The tournament qualified
the USA team for a spot in the Junior World Cup,
September 14-25 in Santiago, Chile.
With her return to Michigan, Fuchs rejoins a
Wolverine team she helped establish as one of the
nation's top field hockey programs. Fuchs previously
spent eight years with the Michigan program, serving
five seasons as the Wolverines' top assistant
(1996-2000) and three as a volunteer coach (2001-03).
During her coaching tenure at Michigan, the
Wolverines earned five trips to the NCAA Tournament and
captured the 2001 NCAA Championship.
She joins a staff that includes recently-named head
coach Nancy Cox and assistant Pat Cota, member of the
USA Field Hockey men's national team.
A member of the USA National Team from 1987-2004,
Fuchs appeared in 263 international matches. Fuchs
played for the U.S. in both the 1988 (Seoul) and 1996
(Atlanta) Olympic Games, and competed in the 1990, '94,
'98 and 2002 World Cup tournaments. She competed in all
five contested Pan American Games women's tournaments,
winning four silver medals and one bronze medal.
A collegiate player at the University of Connecticut,
Fuchs was selected as the 1987 Honda Broderick Award
recipient for field hockey, an award recognizing the
nation's top collegiate field hockey player. She was a
three time All-America first team (1985, '86, '87)
selection, and helped the Huskies to the 1985 NCAA
National championship.
