USA Field Hockey National Hockey Festival Underway in West Palm Beach Co. 

WELLINGTON, Fla. – Two-hundred twenty three teams from across the nation celebrated Thanksgiving in traditional field hockey style as USA Field Hockey opened its 2005 National Hockey Festival at the Palm Beach Polo Club.

The world’s largest field hockey event, the Festival has been the Thanksgiving destination for field hockey players since 1922 when it originated as the National Sectional Championship. The event makes its seventh appearance in Palm Beach County after previous trips to Palm Beach Polo in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2004.

The 3,800 athletes and teams from 23 states Canada and Trinidad & Tobago completed first-day action in their quests for championships in Women’s Age Group (Under 16 and Under 19), Women’s Open and Mixed (co-ed) divisions. The event will feature 709 games on the Polo Club’s 26 fields.

In the 189-team age U19 and U16 divisions, early pool leaders include teams from California, Connecticut, Delaware, Kentucky, New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, and Virginia.

In the highly competitive Women’s Open Division, defending champion Red Rose (Pa.) opened the tournament with a 2-0 to extend its Festival winning streak to nine games since 2003.

The tournament continues with games through Saturday in the age group divisions with championship games in the Open and mixed divisions scheduled for Sunday.
