USA Field Hockey National Hockey Festival Concludes in West Palm Beach

WELLINGTON, Fla. (11/27/05)  –  Holland Tunnel, a team of current and former U.S. National Team members and college coaches,  captured a record 10^th  women’s open division title and Big Apple Flickers (N.Y.)  won the mixed division as USA Field Hockey concluded its annual National Hockey Festival at the Palm Beach Polo Club.

The championship games concluded the four-day event that featured 226  teams and more than 3,500 athletes.

On Saturday, USA Field Hockey crowned 27 high school-age group champions in the Under-19 and Under-16 divisions. 

In the women’s championship game, Holland Tunnel used goals by 1996 Olympian Antoinette Lucas and U.S. national team goalkeeping coach Justin Sowry for a come-from-behind 2-1 win over What Nots. Celebrating the team’s 25^th appearance at the Festival, Holland Tunnel went a perfect 8-0 en route to their first Open title since 2003 and their 10^th  overall championship.

The team included Lucas’ 1996 Olympic teammates Liz Tchou, Tracey Fuchs and Diane Madl as well as current National Team members Barb Weinberg and Kristen Holmes-Winn.

In the mixed division, Big Apple Flickers edged Mavericks 3-0 to finish the Festival with a 7-0-1 record and the team’s first Festival title.

USA Field Hockey is the national governing body for the sport in the United States as recognized by the United States Olympic Committee, the International Hockey Federation and the International Olympic Committee. In addition to promoting and developing the sport, USA Field Hockey is responsible for the training and selection of field hockey athletes for participation in the Olympic Games, Pan American Games, World Cup and other international competitions.
