USA Field Hockey Crowns Age Group Division Champions at National Hockey Festival

WELLINGTON, Fla. – USA Field Hockey crowned 27 high school-age group division champions – including seven from the state of Pennsylvania – as the annual National Hockey Festival continued at the Palm Beach Polo Club.

The tournament concludes Sunday with championships in the adult open and mixed divisions.

Pennsylvania was the overall winner at the Festival for the age group division teams, but only by a slight margin. The field hockey hotbed captured 13 pool titles in 2004, but claimed only seven championships in this year’s Festival. Pennsylvania won four of the 20 Under-19 age group pools and three of the seven Under-16 pools. Ten states split the remaining pool titles including New York, Virginia and New Jersey with three titles each, California, Delaware, Kentucky and Massachusetts with two championships each and Connecticut, Maryland and New Hampshire all claiming one Festival crown apiece.

In addition to their championship medals, teams winning their pools receive a coveted automatic berth in the 2006 National Hockey Festival in Palm Springs, Calif. Other participants for the filled-to-capacity event are selected via a lottery held in the spring.

In the women’s open division, nine-time champion Holland Tunnel advanced to the championship game along and will take on What Nots for the title. A team comprised of former and current USA national team members and collegiate coaches, Holland Tunnel last won the title in 2003. Defending champion Red Rose was eliminated form the championship hunt following a 3-1 loss to What Nots in the Open Division quarterfinals.

In the mixed division, Mavericks (Md.) will meet DG Field Hockey in one semifinal while Yuba City (Calif.) will take on Big Apple Flickers (N.Y.) in the other semifinal match.

The world’s largest field hockey event, the Festival features 3,800 athletes competing in more than 700 games during the course of the four-day event.

USA Field Hockey is the national governing body for the sport in the United States as recognized by the United States Olympic Committee, the International Hockey Federation and the International Olympic Committee. In addition to promoting and developing the sport, USA Field Hockey is responsible for the training and selection of field hockey athletes for participation in the Olympic Games, Pan American Games, World Cup and other international competitions.
