Red Rose Women, Mystery Men Claim USA Club Championships

Colorado Springs, Colo. (May 1, 2005) –  Red Rose continued its season-long domination of USA Field Hockey women's club events while Mystery captured the men's title at the 2nd USA Club Championship in Virginia Beach, Va.

The ten women's teams and five men's squads earned selection to the tournament based on performances in their respective club leagues or regional representation.

A team with a three-decade history, Pennsylvania-based Red Rose won the women's championships with a 6-1 win over California's Monarcas in the tournament final. The win marked the third straight major USA Field Hockey event championship for Red Rose as the team collected the sport's "grand slam" of club championships with victories at the 2004 National Hockey Festival, 2005 National Indoor Tournament and USA Club Championship.

The Greenwich Rovers defeated Third Degree, 1-0 for third place.

In the championship game Red Rose received two goals from USA National Team member Angie Loy and one goal from USA National teamer Melissa Leonetti to coast to the 6-1 win. Barb Doran and Lynn Farquahar added goals for Red Rose.

Red Rose cruised to the title game after going 4-0 in pool play and outscoring opponent's 18-2. The team was almost derailed in its quest for the championship in the semifinals however when Red Rose needed a Loy goal in extra time to defeat the Greenwich Rovers, 3-2.

Loy finished the tournament as the event's leading scorer with 12 goals. Loy was followed in the scoring rankings by Sheri Masich of the Washington Shredders who collected six goals for the tournament including a four-goal effort in a 4-0 win over the Washington Field Hockey Assoc. Nara Brooks of the Monarcas and USA Indoor Team member Debbie Brooks of Third Degree scored five goals each for their teams.

Mystery Captures Men's Title

A team consisting of younger members of USA Field Hockey's men's national team, Mystery won the five-team men's division with a penalty-stroke victory over the Tri-State Falcons in the championship game.

The Mystery squad included U.S. Junior National Team members Jed Cunningham, Zach Frendulich, Pat Harris, Sean Harris, Danny Jordan, Richard Jordan, Jacob Schlosser, Malachi Mahan, Chris Pothier, Chris Niles, Emmad Farooqui, Ryan Sherburne and goalkeeper Jeb Saez. The USA junior men placed fourth at the Pan Am Junior Championships in February.

Following a 3-0-1 record in round-robin play, Mystery came back to nip Tri-State Falcons in the final. The tournament's leading scorer, Pat Harris put Mystery up 1-0 early in the gamebefore Tri-State's Patrick Stutz provided the equalizer early in the second half. The two teams would go scoreless throughout the remainder of the game before Mystery captured the title in penalty strokes. Tri-State finished in the runner-up spot for the second consecutive year after finishing second to another team of U.S. national squad players, the LA Tigers, in 2004.

Harris and USA Field Hockey Athlete of the Year Shawn Hindy of the Mavericks tied for the tournament scoring lead with five goals each. Tri-State's Stutz added four goals while Sukhdev Singh collected three for San Jose Khalsa.

Mavericks defeated San Jose Khalsa, 3-2, for third place while San Francisco placed fifth.
