USA Field Hockey Women Head to Barbados for Pan Am Cup

Kristen McCann and the USA women look ahead to the Pan Am Cup

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The USA field hockey women turn their attention to the 2006 World Cup this month as the team travels to Bridgetown, Barbados for the 2nd Pan American Cup.

Serving as the continental qualifier for the 2006 World Cup in Madrid, Spain, the Pan American Cup will see the USA women begin play  in Pool B against Trinidad & Tobago, Pan American Games bronze medalist Uruguay and host Barbados. Pool A includes reining world champion Argentina, Canada, Chile and Netherlands Antilles.
The tournament begins April 21 and runs through the 28th with the winner earning an automatic spot in the 2006 World Cup.

Head coach Beth Anders' 18-member USA team includes Kate Barber (West Chester, Pa.), Katie Beach (West Lawn, Pa.), April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa.), Tracey Fuchs (Centereach, N.Y.),  Kristi Gannon (Escondido, Calif.), Tara Jelley (Greenfield, Mass.), Meredith Keller (Wilmington, Del.), Tracey Larson (Morrisville, Pa.), Melissa Leonetti (Erdenheim, Pa.), Carrie Lingo (Rehoboth Beach, Del.), Angie Loy (Loysville, Pa.), Kristen McCann (Allentown, Pa.), Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.), Keli Smith (Selinsgrove, Pa.) Mimi Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.), Abbey Woolley (Ocean City, N.J.) and goalkeepers Amy Tran (Grantville, Pa.) and Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.).

The Pan Am Cup champion will join continental champions from Oceania, Asia (India), Europe, and Africa in the World Cup, Sept. 27-Oct. 7, 2006 in Madrid. The five continental champions will be joined by seven additional teams from the World Cup Qualifying Tournament in 2002.

The USA women placed second behind Argentina in the first Pan American Cup in 2001.
