USA Women Open Pan Am Cup with 9-0 win over Trinidad & Tobago

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – Tracey Fuchs and Angie Loy scored two goals each to lead the USA field hockey team to a convincing 9-0 win over Trinidad & Tobago in the opening game of the 2nd Pan American Cup.

The eight-team tournament serves as a qualifier for the 2006 FIH Women’s World Cup with the tournament champion earning the continental berth in field hockey’s world championship tournament. The World Cup is scheduled for Sept. 27 – Oct. 7, 2006 in Madrid, Spain.

Seven different USA players scored goals in the Pan Am Cup opener while goalkeeper Amy Tran capped her second career start with the shutout.  Kristen McCann put the USA up early with a field goal in the ninth minute and Carrie Lingo and Fuchs quickly added penalty corner goals to give the USA a 3-0 lead 17 minutes into the game. Loy added a penalty corner score just before halftime to give the U.S. a 4-0 halftime advantage.

Fuchs added to the USA lead midway through the second half before Loy, Kristi Gannon, Abbey Woolley and April Fonzoni concluded the game with a flurry of four goals in seven minutes to end the game.

Head coach Beth Anders and the USA continue tournament play Tuesday against host Barbados.
