USA Field Hockey Women Coast to 7-1 Win Over Barbados at Pan Am Cup

BRIDGERTOWN, Barbados. – The USA field hockey team got off to a quick start and coasted to a 7-1 victory over host Barbados at the 2nd Pan American Cup. The tournament serves as the continental qualifying event for the 2006 FIH Women’s World Cup.

The USA jumped out to an early 4-0 lead as Kristen McCann, Angie Loy, Tracey Fuchs and Kate Barber collected goals in the first 15 minutes of the game. The USA continued its domination through the first half as Mimi Smith and Fuchs connected on penalty corner attempts to give the U.S. a 6-0 halftime lead.

Keli Smith added to the USA advantage early in the second half with a field goal in the 43rd minute before Barbados avoided the shutout with a penalty corner goal from Tricia Ann Greaves.  Greaves is a former standout at Hofstra Univ. and was reunited with Hofstra head coach Kathy De Angelis at the tournament. De Angleis is serving as an assistant coach for the Barbados team.

The goals by Fuchs gave her four tallies in the tournament while Loy collected her third score of the event.

With the win, the USA raises its record to 2-0 at the tournament while outscoring its opponents 15-1. Barbados drops to 0-2 at the event. The USA concludes pool play on Saturday against Pan American Games bronze medalist Uruguay.
